Sydney is improving every year, and this year isn’t any different. As a local Sydney sider, I thought it was only right to do a deep dive on amazing things to do in and around Sydney. Here’s my top 11 things (because I really couldn’t narrow it down to just 10!) to do in and near Sydney, and no, this doesn’t include the standard Harbour Bridge and Opera House.
The New Sydney Fish Market
The new Sydney Fish Market is set to open its doors in January 2026, and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for Sydney’s seafood lovers. It will remain the largest fish market in the Southern Hemisphere and the third largest in the world. Located in Blackwattle Bay, it’s just minutes from Darling Harbour and right next door to the original Sydney Fish Market. The new space will feature more than 40 retailers along with a wide variety of dining options. Visitors can watch the early-morning seafood auctions, browse the stalls, and enjoy some seriously delicious seafood. The market opens it’s doors from 7am daily. Entry is free, but be prepared to indulge, all while soaking up the peaceful and picturesque waterfront views.
Darling Harbour
Darling Harbour is one of those must-visit Sydney spots that always deserves a place on your itinerary. It is currently undergoing a major upgrade (as of 2026), with a brand-new shopping and dining precinct set to open in mid-2027. In the meantime, exciting additions like the new IMAX and the W Hotel have recently opened and are already proving popular with visitors. Along the scenic waterfront walk, you’ll find attractions such as the SEA LIFE Aquarium, Madame Tussauds, WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo, and a great selection of restaurants. Families should pack swimmers for the Palm Grove water play area and enjoy the nearby playground. Out of all the things to do in Sydney with my little ones, spending the day at Darling Harbour is always first on our list, especially on the warmer days.
Entry to Darling Harbour is free, including the playgrounds and water features. It’s also easily accessible with a 10-minute walk from Town Hall Station or via light rail from Central Station to stops like Paddy’s Markets, Exhibition Centre, Convention or Pyrmont Bay.

Bubble Planet
After successful runs in London, Toronto and Milan, Bubble Planet opened in Sydney in June 2025 and has quickly become a hit with both locals and tourists. It is located in Sydney Olympic Park, around 18km from the CBD. This immersive experience features over 10 interactive rooms, including adult-sized ball pits, infinity-style worlds and VR experiences (for a fee). It’s playful, visually stunning and packed with photo opportunities, making it perfect for all ages. Bubble Planet is closed on Tuesdays and operates from 9am–5pm, with extended hours until 7pm on Saturdays. Tickets start from $33.90 for adults and $26.90 for children. Just note that prams will need to be parked at the entrance.
Wildlife Experiences in Sydney
Tourists from around the world come to Australia to meet our iconic furry friends, and Sydney offers plenty of unforgettable wildlife experiences across the city and surrounding regions.
Taronga Zoo
Located in Mosman, Taronga Zoo is home to over 4,000 animals and is one of Sydney’s most iconic attractions. One of the best ways we get there is by ferry, making the journey part of the experience, especially when passing under the Harbour Bridge with views of the Opera House. The zoo is open daily from 9:30 am–5pm, with tickets starting from $49.50 for adults and $29.70 for children.
Sydney Zoo
Sydney Zoo is located in Bungarribee, around 39km from the CBD. Public transport options are limited, so driving is recommended, with plenty of parking and drop-off zones available. While Taronga offers closer animal encounters, Sydney Zoo stands out for its elevated viewing platforms, where visitors can spot zebras, lions and giraffes from above in open-style habitats.
Calmsley Hill City Farm
This is a fantastic day out for families with young kids. Located in Abbotsbury (around 47km from the CBD), Calmsley Hill Farm offers hands-on farm experiences, including a sheep shearing show, friendly animals to pat, and a relaxing tractor ride through the paddocks. My kids loved the sheep show and spent so much time petting the horse. The horse wasn’t part of any show; it was just near the fence and was so friendly, it was for sure the highlight of the farm. The tractor ride is booked at the gate for an allocated time. Adult tickets are $32, children are $17, and kids under 3 enter for free. Family passes, senior and pensioner tickets are also available, with animal feed and tractor rides purchased separately.
Symbio Wildlife World
Symbio Wildlife World is located in Helensburgh, approximately 60km south of the CBD. It is best accessed by car, with a large parking area available. Symbio is especially loved for its kangaroo and wallaby feeding experiences, which take place towards the back of the park. The penguins are also a standout favourite, and during warmer months, kids can cool off in the on-site splash pool, so don’t forget swimmers. We try to go there once per year, and we were there recently for Emma Memma (my little one is a massive fan). Online ticket prices start from $44 for adults and $29 for children aged 3 and over, with free entry for children under 3. Family passes, season passes, and animal encounter experiences are also available.
Blue Mountains
The Blue Mountains is a stunning natural escape, which is roughly 1.5 hours away from Sydney (Sydney CBD to Katoomba). It’s most famous for the Three Sisters, which provide unforgettable lookout points and discovering hidden waterfalls through its walking tracks. We took one walking track a couple of years ago, and although it was long and I was completely exhausted by the time we finished (think big hill down and an even steeper walk back up), the waterfall was such a sight to see. NOTE: the Jenolan Caves are closed and will reopen in late 2026 due to road repairs. If you are searching for another natural activity, the Jenolan Caves offers amazing ancient limestone formations and guided tours that take you through underground caves. Pre-booking the guided tours is essential, especially during school holidays and peak times.
Stunning beaches out of Sydney – Wollongong and The Entrance

There are so many stunning beaches in Sydney; however, I’ve chosen two of my favourite beaches that aren’t too far away from Sydney, which are so peaceful and amazing. Discover the most breathtaking water yet in Wollongong Beach, which is roughly a 1.5-hour drive south of Sydney. North Wollongong Beach is the most popular, and a hidden gem is Windang Beach, which has a lake on the other side of the cove, which is perfect for any day out.
The Entrance is also another amazing beach spot, which is north of Sydney. The journey also takes roughly 1.5 hours of travel. What makes The Entrance so special is that it is tucked between the Tuggerah Lake and the coastline of Australia, making it perfect for any water lover. Other beach options that I love include Pearl Beach, Bronte Beach and Palm Beach.
Go Karting
There are several go-karting spots in Sydney for any adrenaline lover for a fun and thrilling day out. The most popular is Hyper Karting in Moore Park. BattleKart in Moore Park or Entertainment Park located in South West Sydney are also popular spots. The popular adventure-seeking spot is perfect for adults and children who don’t want to experience the usual sightseeing adventures.
Jet Skiing on Hawkesbury River
If you enjoy discovering beautiful waterways and crave speed, jet skiing on the Hawkesbury River combines both. The excitement of speeding over the water is unmatched, just like the stunning views you’ll encounter during your ride. Even if you’re new to jet skiing and lack a license, you’ll still have the chance to take control and speed across the river. Bookings can be made via Adrenaline, RedBalloon or directly. Prices vary based on package inclusions.
Museum of Illusions
The Museum of Illusions is Sydney’s newest perspective-changing rooms and optical illusion installations. This immersive experience will have you questioning how we view certain objects. It is also perfect for photos and fun with friends and family. The Museum of Illusions is located in the CBD, and tickets start from $47 for adults and $36 for children 4 years and above. Children under 4 enter free with an infant ticket. There are also family tickets for a family of 4 for $152, and an additional child costs $29.
VIVID Sydney
Vivid Sydney is Sydney’s annual light show installation that is held in the cooler months (dates vary each year). In 2026, the confirmed dates are 22nd May – 13th June 2026. Vivid transforms the city of Sydney into a magical display of light, music and creativity. Iconic buildings such as the Museum of Contemporary Art, streets such as Argyle Street and public spaces light up with projections and interactive installations.
Each year, Vivid Sydney showcases international and local artists throughout their installations. Live music, events and creative experiences are also held during Vivid Sydney, making it a memorable evening out in the city. Food icon Nigella Lawson hosted an exclusive dining experience for three nights during Vivid in 2025, too. The light installations are free to view, although some VIP experiences, food and music are paid experiences. Public transport is a must when visiting, especially on weekends.
Restaurants and Cafe’s
If there’s one thing that Sydney Siders love, it’s having a coffee or brunch on a gorgeous sunny day. You’ll find cafes throughout Sydney, and each coffee is better than the next in my honest opinion. I usually find the best coffees in quietly kept cafes that have the perfect ambience with friendly and welcoming baristas.
Conclusion
Sydney truly offers something for everyone! From immersive city experiences and iconic wildlife encounters to relaxing coastal escapes and unforgettable day trips. With the new Sydney Airport opening in late 2026/early 2027, theres never been a better time to start planning your Sydney trip. Locals love plane spotting in Sydney Airport! From family-friendly adventures to foodie favourites and scenic escapes, Sydney delivers memorable moments at every turn. No matter your travel style, these experiences will help you make the most of your time in and around this vibrant city.
