Skyscanner vs Google Flights. Which One Is Worth It?

Let’s put this to the test Google Flights vs Skyscanner? Which one can give me the best flights and cheaper prices?

Google Flights and Skyscanner are both flight search engines that gives results for hundreds of airlines and travel partners. Users can compare flights and prices of different flights to their respective destinations and dates. Users can also check the best available price for their destinations based on various dates. These search engines automatically sort flights into the category ‘best value’, however, users can refine their results by flight duration, lowest to highest price, number of stops and more.

The flight search engines also allow users to create travel alerts for the best deals when they arise. We did this when we were planning to travel to Dubai in 2024. I selected the flight I was most interested in and received alerts in my email whenever the price changed for that flight. One day, I got lucky and booked the flight for $1000 less than I would have if I booked it right away.

Google Flights and Skyscanner are not direct booking websites such as Expedia or Trip.com. Once users have found their best flight on Skyscanner or Google Flights, users can click the outbound link directly to the airline or travel partner. The best part about this is that it is completely FREE for anyone to use (you don’t even need to make an account). Both websites also allow users to search for Hotels and Skyscanner has another feature for Car Hire.

Using Google Flights is fairly simple. Search for Google Flights on Google or go to this link

Search for your destination and dates. I want to go from Sydney to New York, so I will enter New York in the ‘Where to?’ box. Then select how many travellers, cabin class and if it is a one-way or return flight.

Here comes the fun part. If your dates are locked in you can go ahead and select your dates and click search. However, if your dates are flexible, Google Flights has price comparisons in its calendar and date search. From my search, I can see that the amounts in green are giving me the best and cheapest options.

Booking Google Flights Using The Map Feature

If you don’t have a set designation in mind, using Google Flights using the map feature is sure to impress. The Map feature allows users to check prices based on certain or flexible destinations around the world to find suitable options for their budget. To use this feature, visit Google Flights using the desktop and scroll down just under the search widget to the map feature. Click on the Map, enter your dates and explore the map, it’s that simple! Once you have found a suitable flight, click on the city and you will get search results for that city.

Booking with Skyscanner is very similar to booking with Google Flights. Visit Skyscanner.com and enter your destination, dates, cabin class, passengers and return/one-way. Results are normally shown in a best-value rating. If you are using the desktop version, search filters are displayed on the left-hand side of the webpage, whilst on mobile, search filters are at the bottom of the screen. Filters can be adjusted by the number of stops, departure time, duration, airlines and different airports.

Skyscanner also has an explore everywhere feature, found on the ‘to’ box in the search widget. Click Explore Everywhere, and enter all other information such as passengers, cabin class etc. Skyscanner will give results for the cheapest flights from your origin city, however, they also have other options such as underrated cities, outdoor adventures and beach destinations amongst some others.

Skyscanner has taken the win on this one with over $100 in savings compared to Google Flights. If you are still unsure about which search engine to use, why not use both like I just did and check for yourself which platform will give you the best price for your destination and travel dates.
